The “Survey on foreign visitors at border crossings” is conducted in accordance with the Law on State Statistics (“Official
Gazette of the Republic of Macedonia No. 54/97, 21/07, 51/11, 104/13, 42/14, 192/15 and 27/16), the Programme
of Statistical Surveys 2013-2017 (“Official Gazette of the Republic of Macedonia No. 20/13, 24/14, 13/15 and 7/16) and
Regulation (EU) No. 692/2011 of the European Parliament and of the Council, according to which the State Statistical Office is authorised for the preparation of methodologies, instruments for implementation, collection, processing, analysis and publication of statistical data. The survey is organised in cooperation with the Ministry of Internal Affairs - Department of Border Police.
This survey has been conducted on a regular basis since 1980. The last data produced by the State Statistical Office
are from 2009.
The survey conducted in 2016 provides structural data on foreign visitors (same-day visitors - excursionists, transit
visitors or overnight visitors), their social characteristics, expenditures, and rating of services in the country. The survey
has been conducted on a sample of 1628 visitors at nine border crossings, of which eight for passenger cars and one at the airports.
The processed data are presented in tables, which are included in this publication. These data, used together with
the existing monthly and yearly border crossing statistics maintained by the Ministry of Internal Affairs - Department of
Border Police, will help users to perform adequate analyses of tourism and tourism revenues.
The State Statistical Office would appreciate any suggestion for improving the statistical survey and the quality of data.
