Many countries in Europe and Central Asia face rapid demographic change: societies are growing older, people have fewer children, and many leave their countries to look for opportunities elsewhere.
Skopje, 30 November 2021 – The Ministerial Conference "Shaping Europe’s Demographic Future", which will convene numerous high-level government representatives, leaders and experts from across Europe and Central Asia, including a delegation from the Republic of North Macedonia, will be held on 1 and 2 December 2021 in Sofia, Republic of Bulgaria.
The conference, which will discuss demographic resilience and strengthening the capacity of countries to respond to demographic shifts in the region, is organised by the United Nations Population Fund - UNFPA and the Government of the Republic of Bulgaria, under the auspices of the President of the Republic of Bulgaria.
The main themes of the conference are population ageing, fertility, gender equality, family policies, aspirations of young people, revitalisation of rural areas, financing of social policies, and the interlinkages between demography and democracy.
The delegation from the Republic of North Macedonia consists of the Minister of Labour and Social Policy, Jagoda Shahpaska, the Director of the State Statistical Office, Apostol Simovski, and other representatives from various fields, as well as the UNFPA National Office.
The conference will result in the launch of a Decade of Demographic Resilience 2022-2032 and the Sofia Alliance, a Member State-led community of practice to facilitate sharing of experiences and broker policy advice and technical assistance on strengthening demographic resilience.
Participants will be able to learn about and engage with good practices and promising initiatives related to addressing demographic change at the virtual Demographic Resilience Expo.
