Statistical portrait of trends in gender equality
31.10.2022

UN Women and the State Statistics Office (SSO) promoted the publication "Women and men in North Macedonia - a statistical portrait of trends in gender equality".

This publication presents a historical analysis of 12 editions of SSO’s signature publication in the field of gender statistics "Women and Men in North Macedonia", published in the period 2000 - 2021.

While analyzing data collected over a period of over twenty years, the main goal of the publication that we promoted is to determine the clear trends or changes regarding the status of women in the period 2000-2021 and to give an overview of the situation with gender equality in our country.

The event encompassed official addresses Vesna Ivanovikj-Castarede, UN Women North Macedonia Head of Office, the Director of the State Statistics Office, Apostol Simovski, the Head of the Training Center at the Secretariat for European Affairs, Elizabeta Buova on behalf of the State Secretary Drita Abdiu-Halili, Elena Grozdanova, State Adviser at the Ministry of Labor and Social Policy, and Mikael Atterhög, Head of Development Cooperation at the Embassy of Sweden in North Macedonia.

Additionally, Marina Mijovska, Advisor in the Director’s Office of the State Statistical Office presented their work in the realm of gender statistics, while Ljupka Trajanovska, National Gender Statistics Expert, presented the methodology and main findings of the promoted analysis.

During the discussion, it was concluded that this publication is a much-needed tool in the process of gender mainstreaming in the EU accession process, but also in the process of designing all future national policies and strategies. Also, the discussion emphasized the importance of the GEF project in the process of aligning the national legislation, strategies, and policies with the EU gender acquis.

This analysis is produced within the Gender Equality Facility (GEF) North Macedonia, funded by Sweden, implemented by UN Women in North Macedonia in partnership with the Secretariat for European Affairs and the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy, and in close collaboration with the State Statistical Office.

The publication is available in Macedonian, Albanian and English, and can be downloaded from the UN Women regional office website: https://bit.ly/3TTxakK
